Pending manual confirmationResearch overview
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide (7 amino acids) and a highly stable, potent analogue of endogenous α‑melanocyte‑stimulating hormone (α‑MSH). Its core innovation lies in the construction of a cyclic structure via an amide bridge (formed between Asp⁵ and Lys¹⁰), which significantly enhances its in vivo stability and blood–brain barrier permeability. As a potent, non‑selective melanocortin receptor agonist, Melanotan II binds with high affinity to multiple receptor subtypes, including MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. Activation of MC1R on skin melanocytes stimulates melanin production and promotes tanning, while activation of MC3R and MC4R in the central nervous system regulates appetite and energy balance and stimulates endogenous oxytocin release. In addition, studies have also reported additional activities, including lipolysis promotion and enhanced libido.

Product FAQ
What is Melanotan II?
Melanotan II (also known as MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin by activating melanocortin receptors (primarily MC1R), inducing skin tanning. Unlike Melanotan I, Melanotan II has a cyclic structure with higher stability and a longer half-life, and it has activity at MC1R, MC3R, and MC4R receptors—resulting in additional effects such as libido enhancement and appetite suppression beyond tanning.
What is the mechanism of action of Melanotan II?
Melanotan II works by binding to and activating the MC1R receptor on skin melanocytes, promoting tyrosinase synthesis and activity, which converts tyrosine into melanin (primarily eumelanin). Due to its cyclic structure and higher receptor affinity, Melanotan II also activates MC3R and MC4R receptors in the central nervous system.
What effect does Melanotan II have on moles and freckles?
Melanotan II stimulates systemic melanin production through MC1R, so moles, freckles, and existing skin lesions may darken and become more prominent. New moles or freckles may develop during Melanotan II research. Skin lesions should be monitored before and after research, and any changes in shape, color, or size should be evaluated by a specialist.
How does Melanotan II differ from Melanotan I?
Melanotan II has a shorter, cyclic 7‑amino‑acid structure that makes it more stable and longer‑acting, whereas Melanotan I is a linear 13‑amino‑acid peptide closer to natural α‑MSH. The key difference is that Melanotan II non‑selectively activates MC1R, MC3R, and MC4R, so in addition to tanning (MC1R), it also produces libido enhancement, appetite suppression, and spontaneous erections, while Melanotan I is highly selective for MC1R and focuses mainly on tanning and photoprotection—without those additional systemic effects.
What are the main research areas for Melanotan II?
· Skin tanning (achieving skin color without sun exposure)
· Photoprotection (prevention of UV damage)
· Photosensitive skin disorders (e.g., erythropoietic protoporphyria, EPP)
· Erectile dysfunction (non-selective MC3R/MC4R activation effects)
· Libido regulation
· Appetite suppression and weight management
· Vitiligo
