The identity question comes before the evidence question
Melanotan I is used in the melanocortin literature for NDP-MSH, while public compound databases can use afamelanotide for a defined record. These terms make useful search anchors, but they do not identify a particular vial, its preparation, or its batch documents. A defensible record keeps the source term, formulation, and experimental system visible before comparing any result.
Source record 1: a melanocortin tool-compound map
Weirath and Haskell-Luevano (2024; PMID 39296259) review five melanocortin receptor subtypes and place NDP-MSH (Melanotan I), Melanotan II, and SHU9119 among synthetic alpha-MSH-derived tool compounds. This source is a receptor-pharmacology map: it is useful for separating names, receptor subtypes, and assay questions. It is not a batch assay and does not report analytical data for the linked product.
Source record 2: a formulation-specific preparation
Bhardwaj et al. (2000; PMID 10888312) studied Melanotan-I incorporated into a poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) implant. Their workflow included release from the formulation, a frog-skin bioassay, and a guinea-pig model with reflectometry and HPLC-based pigment analysis. The test article was therefore a polymer formulation evaluated in defined non-human systems, not an unformulated catalogue item.
What the comparison changes
The two sources answer different questions. The first classifies receptor tool compounds; the second tests a specific polymer formulation and measurement chain. Neither source establishes that a received material has the same sequence, formulation, release behavior, analytical profile, or result. Treating both as a general claim about a product would erase the material differences that make the papers interpretable.
Documentation decision
For the material in hand, retain the product label, lot identifier, receipt date, and supplied COA or SDS. Record any analytical result with its stated method and named lot. Keep the two literature records beside, not inside, that batch file: one explains a receptor-tool context; the other explains a formulation-specific experiment.
